Serengeti National Park

Destination Overview

Serengeti National Park is one of Tanzania’s most famous and iconic safari destinations, celebrated for its vast savannahs, rich biodiversity, and the legendary Great Wildebeest Migration.

It was established in 1951 and spans 14,750 square kilometers, stretching from northern Tanzania into the western corridor near Kenya, adjoining the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The name “Serengeti” comes from the Maasai word siringet, meaning “endless plains”.

Geography & Landscape

The park is renowned for its varied terrain, which supports a rich variety of wildlife:

  • Open plains – endless grassy landscapes ideal for spotting herds of wildebeest and zebra.
  • Kopjes – rocky outcrops that provide shade and vantage points for predators like lions and leopards.
  • Riverine forests – along the Mara, Grumeti, and other rivers, supporting hippos, crocodiles, and diverse bird species.
  • Acacia woodlands – scattered throughout, offering cover for elephants, giraffes, and smaller mammals.

Wildlife

Serengeti is home to Africa’s most iconic animals, including:

  • The Big Five: lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and black rhinoceros
  • Other mammals: cheetah, hyena, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, hippo, warthog, jackal, and various antelope species
  • Birds: over 500 species, including raptors, flamingos, and migratory species
  • Special highlights: predator-prey dynamics, huge herds during the migration, and rare sightings of cheetah and wild dog

The Great Wildebeest Migration

  1. Annual cycle: over 1.5 million wildebeest, along with zebras and gazelles, move in search of fresh pasture.
  2. Key locations:
    • Ndutu – calving season (January–March)

    • Serengeti Plains – grazing season (April–May)

    • Western Corridor & Grumeti River – river crossings (June–July)

    • Mara River – dramatic crossings into Kenya (July–September)

Activities in Serengeti National Park

Game Drives

Game drives are the centerpiece of any Serengeti safari, offering visitors the chance to explore vast plains, kopjes, and riverine forests in search of wildlife. Morning drives often start at sunrise, when predators such as lions and leopards are most active, while the cooler temperatures make animal sightings more frequent.

Afternoon drives showcase grazing herbivores, elephants moving through the savannah, and breathtaking sunsets that paint the landscape in golden hues. Guided by experienced safari experts, guests learn about animal behavior, tracking, and the intricate balance of the Serengeti ecosystem, all from the comfort of open-top 4×4 vehicles that provide excellent vantage points for photography and observation.

Hot Air Balloon Safaris

Hot air balloon safaris offer a unique and serene perspective of the Serengeti, floating silently above the endless grasslands, kopjes, and meandering rivers. Launching just before sunrise, these flights allow travelers to witness herds of wildebeests, zebras, and elephants from above as the first light illuminates the plains.

The experience is often complemented by a luxurious champagne breakfast in the wilderness after landing, creating a memorable combination of adventure, elegance, and spectacular scenery. This activity is ideal for travelers seeking a once-in-a-lifetime way to see the park’s wildlife and landscapes in a completely new perspective.

Walking Safaris

Walking safaris provide a more intimate encounter with the Serengeti’s ecosystem, allowing visitors to explore areas inaccessible to vehicles. Accompanied by armed and highly knowledgeable guides, travelers learn to identify tracks, signs, and subtle behaviors of animals while observing birds, reptiles, insects, and smaller mammals up close.

Walking safaris offer a deeper appreciation of the park’s plant life and ecological interactions, giving guests the chance to experience the sights, sounds, and scents of the wilderness firsthand. Safety is paramount, and guided walks are carefully conducted to balance adventure with protection, offering a personal and immersive connection to the Serengeti.

Cultural Visits

Cultural visits to Maasai villages near the Serengeti’s borders offer a meaningful complement to wildlife safaris, allowing travelers to learn about the customs, traditions, and daily life of local communities.

Guests can observe or participate in traditional dances, crafts, and ceremonies, gaining insights into the Maasai way of life, which has coexisted with the wildlife for generations. These visits are conducted respectfully and provide benefits to the communities while enriching the visitor’s experience, adding a human dimension to the natural beauty of the Serengeti.

Best Time to Visit

    • June–July: western corridor river crossings

    • July–September: Mara River crossings
